Fantazia’s mas designs in 2024 are jewels waiting to be seen

What a 15th birthday party it was for Will Morton on Sunday evening in Scarborough! The veteran carnival mas designer held his 15th annual costume launch for the Fantazia Carnival Mas Band!

Fantazia is led by Hamilton’s Will Morton, “Designer Extraordinaire,” hailing from the Caribbean Island of Nevis. Will, who has always had a passion for designing and creating art, began his carnival journey by volunteering at the Louis Saldenah Mas-K Club before debuting his first section in 1987. Over the years, he has worked with several bands, ultimately founding Fantazia 15 years ago.

The doors opened for the anniversary launch at 3 pm at the banquet hall, and the actual band launch began at 7:30 pm. Over 100 carnival fans and members of the Toronto Caribbean Carnival’s Festival Management Committee’s executive came to St. Peter and Paul’s Banquet Hall to witness the launch of the outfits that Fantazia Carnival revellers will be wearing on the Grande Parade route this August 3rd.

“This year, we’re not just showcasing costumes; we’re celebrating the myriad stories and vibrant cultures that weave the fabric of our community,” said Michelle B. “We launched 7 sections on Sunday evening.”

With names like White Diamonds, Orange Sapphire, and Blue Aura, the seven sections follow Fantazia’s 2024 theme of “Uncut Gemz.” The designs, ranging from oh-la-la skimpy to sexy full-figured, offer something for every body shape and personal taste. These costumes, available for both males and females, come at a cost ranging from the $300s to $1100.

As the Caribbean Camera went to press, Morton’s team was busy posting pictures from the launch, along with prices, on their website. They will soon announce the location of their mas camp where parade participants can come out, see the costumes up close, and sign up to join the parade this summer.

The Fantazia Carnival’s Mas Camp will be opening on Sunday April 21st in Scarborough. The Uncut Gemz costumes will be on display at the band’s headquarters at 418 Consumers Road beginning this Sunday.
